Choosing the hosting site

Rather than worry about the specifications for hosting, it is important to choose the site to do the hosting.

Since Ivan is very active I am going to make the suggestion that Ivan be the one to choose the hosting site.
(I strongly urge him to have the site be located in Switzerland).

Ivan, you of course can decline the responsibility.

Since I have become deaf over the years, I can not pick up the telephone and call prospective organizations.
If I could, I would. So I suggest younger ears to do the work.

Comments please.

My vision of solving of hosting problem.

First we need to decide the place for making the preliminary specification.

The very draft project of such preliminary specification:
"To rent the virtual web-server (find better technical solution and pay from donations money) in __(country name)__ and configure it for using the PHPBB forum, web-site with CMS _________, MediaWiki, (Redmine?). To provide SFTP access to web-site directories for volunteer web-developers."

Then some members can said that they can do this for Center and later manage the server. OberonCore said that they can do this if we ask.
The person who are setting up the server and then support it should be the one person.

I prefer to concentrate on developing of modern BlackBox Components Exchange Web-site, instead of administrating web-server.

For the finishing the server location vote we need only one voice.

Then we need to choose CMS for main web-site (WordPress, DocuWiki or I prefer Tribq because it is really international CMS).

Ivan said "For the finishing the server location vote we need only one voice."

All center members who have not cast a vote on the site location please do so NOW!

As far as I can see the vote is now complete

Now we have a way to make preliminary specification and move forums to Zürich and then make votes for CMS and chairman. Or we can first choose the chairman and CMS and then move all there in new hosting.

Let's discuss preliminary specification for web-server configuration! I am suggesting next points.

1. To rent the virtual web-server in Zürich (find company and pay from donations money)
- not more than 8$ per month
- allowing ssh control and installing any software on a server side
2. To configure it for using the PHPBB forum
3. To move there this PHPBB forum from database dump and files archive I provide for you
4. To move there the simple temporary HTML web-page I have made until we didn't choose CMS
5. To move there the mail-archive
6. Provide support and limited SFTP access to web-site directories for volunteer web-developers

What do you think?

Here is a list of the popular hosting companies in Switzerland.
SwissHostingSites.jpg
I have looked briefly at the first 4 and would reject COMLAUDE.CH.
The other 3 are reasonable. The price per month (P) ranges from
10 CHF to 14.90 CHF (swiss francs).

I would be willing to kick in my share of P/#members even at the
14.90 level.

Let's begin to narrow down the options.

Somebody on this forum proposed EDIS hosting, which I cannot find in this list.
The EDIS offer, as far as I remeber, looked reasonably because
it offers a virtual server at a very low cost (EUR 1.54 per month) with the option of upgrading
if there is any need for it.

EDIS looks very good, because they are suggesting Virtual Dedicated Server (Dedicated Hosting, hosting types), that means that we can install any software on server side combining different serving software: Apache2 for PHP, Unicorn for Ruby (in future BlackBox Server for some BlackBox services...). In the Douglas table there are hosting companies that suggesting "Shared Hosting". It is good if we want to have more space with less money and easy hosting control panel, but do not need flexibility.

However, for good performance (with Ubuntu server) at Edis we need KVM Starter for € 6,49... but we can try less. FreeBSD OS will give better performance in less powerful hosting.
