I tested it on Vista and XP.

It is over 10 years since I used MathType, so maybe recent versions have changed ... but it was not to my taste; both the way it worked and the results it produced.

I now use LaTeX equations in BlackBox documents frequently, and much prefer it.

Ok the implementation as bitmaps is a bit unrefined, but it means that it is easy to distribute documents without any compatibility issues. And if it is good enough for Wikipaedia users, it is good enough for me,

a bit off topic but...
MathType is not needed in order to open and display documents that contain formulae.
Tex as input language is also supported.
I am not an expert in formula editing, though.
I mainly noticed that the integration via COM/OLE works nicely
and pretty fast and the documents are reasonably small.

I forget the details, and its probably fixed now, but that was one of the problems. There were two ways to edit an existing equation, one of which always crashed the system, although the other worked.

For what its worth, I really do not like TeX. I am forced to use it if I wish to
publish in the American Physical Society (APS) journals. They specify a packed
called RevTeX.

So, back to me to find out why BB Search is trapping.
When I moved from 1.6 to 1.7 I was very careful to remove all
code and sym directories. So there should be no compiler
conflicts.

Robert,
Here is what MathType 6.9 looks like (slightly better)

Doug, I think, that this advanced search should leave as a simple additional components. With improved components system there will be not big deal to find and install your component.
I think, that we should agree about some central repository (I am suggest to concentrate our attention around Helmut's repository) and provide some link to this repository and some online interface from BlackBox for searching and installing components from the Internet.

Thank you.
Interesting suggestion.
