If you look hard enough you will find that any of the possibilities are not available in one country or another - whether it is the organisation or the country itself that prevents it.

I have no objection to country-access limitations being one of the criteria to be considered but I don't believe it should be a reason for outright rejection. Keep in mind that citizens of some countries (the U.S. perhaps?) might be breaking their country's laws by making code, that they have contributed to, available to blacklisted countries.

CodePlex would be my preference - my reasons are both non-political and non-technical: a) it is used to host Gardens Point Component Pascal and b) I found it easy to use:

I would reject anything that 'requires' .NET simply because .NET is a hog of disk space. It is not in the spirit of 'make it as simple as possible'. It also embeds us too strongly in the Microsoft world (yes we already are but ...).

The question is. Were will be the public (read-only) git repository and project tracker for the final Ominc release and it's future Center modification?

1) GitHub
2) BitBucket
3) Gitorious
4) Our own tuned Redmine (like redmine.molpit.com)
5) Our own tuned GitLab (like gitlab.molpit.com)
6) Public GitHub synced with our own tuned Redmine
7) Sync one repository everywhere above
8) Abstain
First a comment about English (even native speakers make this mistake). 'Were' should be 'Where'. The 'h' is pronounced. When you say 'Where' you should feel a push of air on your hand when you hold it close to your mouth. 'Wear' when pronounced does not produce a puff of air.

Wow, do we really need to worry about all of those options? I thought the source code would simply reside as a downloadable file on EDIS. The coordination of modifications and change would need source code control but all of that would be behind the scenes and running on an EDIS machine. It appears (to my naive eye) that you are suggesting the software reside somewhere other than on an EDIS server. Is that correct?

Please correct me, if I'm wrong, but, it seems that the discussion on the options is not yet over.

I would like to keep the discussion open for a week or so and then put it to vote.

I would like to know, though, if we hosted the repository on a server which is not our own (like with options 1 to 3 in Ivan's list), why is the location of our server essential?

Please don't confuse the issues - that's a whole different story altogether. Using CodePlex to host BlackBox has nothing to do with .NET.

You are right - It isn't. The server would only be required for other uses - e.g. to host the forum.

Please add CodePlex and SourceForge to the list of repository choices. If you want to reduce the list of possibilities then restrict each member to suggesting a maximum of one possibility. If that is so then I nominate that CodePlex be included in the vote.

Surely there is a package that does software control that is independent of any site, a package that can be downloaded to one's own server and used to control their software?

If not, why not?

Of course there are. However, that means who ever has an interest in helping to administer the server would either need to know how or learn how to setup / configure / handle updates / debug and maintain the source control software as well as the forum software, the server software itself, the web authoring software etc. etc. That is for now and the foreseeable future if this project is to survive. Then you would need at least two people at any one time to have each of those skills - you certainly wouldn't want that expertise to be in the hands of a single volunteer without any guarantee of long-term commitment.

All of this is additional complexity and overheads that we do not need.

Public repository do not need to be administrated, there are more then 2 people capable with git to manage public (ex. GitHub) repository.

Rene, please include SourceForge, CodePlex and GoogleCode in the list and lets vote for the repository.
